After recent changes made to facebook privacy settings caused a stir amongst its users and online rights campaigners, many people are wondering if this is Orwell's 1984 in action
Of course not. Its 2009, and we are watching our personal privacy be slowly consumed by a vast octopus like creature we call the internet, the question is is facebook just another sticky tentacle on this data consuming sea monster ?
The general public's concerns are clearly echoed in this statement taken from a distraught cyber mule "i want to be able to upload pictures of myself and comment on my every action and to have as many people as possible see it all on the internet, but i want my privacy."
Many facebook users have no recollection of ever joining the the social networking site yet still find themselves updating and commenting for up to 16 hours a day.
In Japan recently the fire department had to be called to a Tokyo family's home when the fathers eyes had been fused to the screen after 36 continuous days on the internet, the family pets reduced to bones on a kitchen floor.
Facebook claim responsibility lies with the user and that they simply "offer a social networking service." However, competitions such as the one offering a years supply of keyboards to the "facebooker with the most logged hours" clearly show a different ethos at work.
